When a Period Meant Skipping School: Rani’s Story

"Nahi, mai school nahi jaungi."

Rani sat quietly on her bed, curled up in her quilt, staring at the frayed schoolbag lying in front of her. Her mother stood at the doorway, concern in her voice.

“Beta, aaj bhi school nahi jana?”

It was the third day of her period — and Rani wasn’t going to school. Again.

Why?

Because the cloth she had been using — torn from an old saree and handed down by her mother — simply didn’t work. It shifted. It smelled. It leaked.

And last month, it betrayed her in the worst way:

The cloth leaked during school.

Rani’s uniform stained. Her classmates noticed. The teasing, the humiliation, the shame — it was too much to bear. Since then, going to school during her period felt impossible.

Sadly, Rani’s story is not unique.

Across India, millions of adolescent girls still rely on improvised menstrual hygiene solutions — old cloths, rags, or even newspaper — because they lack access to safe, sustainable menstrual products. These makeshift methods often cause leaks, infections, and a deep sense of menstrual shame. As a result, girls miss school during their periods, falling behind academically and emotionally.

A Small Intervention That Changed Everything

Through our partnership with the Flipkart Foundation, we reached over 4,500 girls across Varanasi and Ahmedabad — including Rani — with a simple, effective solution: reusable cloth pads.

These are not the old-style cloths from decades past.

Each pad is:

  • Made with pure cotton for softness and breathability
  • Designed with a leak-proof layer for all-day protection
  • Secured with buttons so it stays in place — no shifting, no slipping

Today, Rani no longer has to choose between her period and her education.
She walks to school confidently, head held high, wearing a pad that doesn’t leak — and carrying a future that finally feels within reach.

Why Rani’s Story Matters — and Why It’s Not Just Hers

Rani isn’t alone. She represents millions of girls across India who quietly sit out of school — not because they lack ambition, but because they lack a pad they can trust.

A simple product changed that for her.

It gave her the freedom to show up. To participate. To learn without fear of stains or shame.
It gave her back her confidence, her routine, her sense of normal.

Now imagine this change — multiplied by thousands.

We’ve already reached thousands of girls through our menstrual health initiatives. But so many more are still waiting.

Every girl deserves the right to manage her period with dignity — and to chase her dreams without interruption.
