On July 16th, our menstrual educators Shalini Gupta and Aditi Gupta organized a significant event aimed at enhancing menstrual hygiene literacy  at St. Thomas School in Indrapuram, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The event saw approximately 200 boys and 250 girls participating in separate sessions, focusing on important aspects of puberty and menstruation. The sessions included educational talks about menstruation, followed by interactive discussions. By addressing common myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation, the organizers aimed to foster a better understanding of menstrual health.

Key Highlights

The first session, conducted from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, focused on girls from classes 6th to 8th. Led by our menstrual educators, this session provided comprehensive education on menstrual hygiene. The girls were introduced to various menstrual hygiene products, including menstrual cups and tampons, highlighting their benefits and proper usage.
During the session, the girls were also taught about the physical changes that females undergo during puberty. This included discussions on hormonal changes, breast development, and the onset of menstruation. These topics were addressed to help the girls understand the natural processes their bodies undergo during adolescence.

To the surprise of many, some girls in attendance were already using menstrual cups, demonstrating an advanced understanding of menstrual hygiene practices. Additionally, the session included discussions on reproductive anatomy to deepen the girls' understanding of their bodies and menstrual cycles. This holistic approach aimed to empower the girls with comprehensive knowledge about their reproductive health and menstrual hygiene, ensuring they are well-informed and confident in managing their menstrual health.

The second session of the event, held from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, was dedicated to educating boys about puberty and menstrual health. The boys were guided through a discussion on the physical changes that occur during puberty, emphasizing the importance of empathy and understanding towards females experiencing menstruation. The session aimed to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding periods, encouraging boys to support their female peers rather than perpetuate stigma or mockery.
Interactive activities were incorporated to gauge the boys' awareness of menstrual cycles. Surprisingly, many boys were already familiar with menstruation and its basic concepts. This awareness was met with further encouragement to promote respectful behavior and empathy towards girls during this natural phase of life.

Impact and Reach

The event successfully reached 450 participants, including 200 boys and 250 girls, significantly enhancing their knowledge and practices regarding menstrual hygiene and puberty. By empowering these young individuals with accurate information and resources, the Pinkishe Foundation has taken a substantial step towards improving menstrual health awareness and fostering a supportive environment in the community. Including boys in the educational sessions underscores Pinkishe's belief in the importance of educating everyone about menstrual health, promoting empathy, and breaking down stigma for a more inclusive and understanding society.

Conclusion

The menstrual hygiene literacy and puberty education event  organized by the Pinkishe Foundation was a resounding success. Through the dedicated efforts of Shalini Gupta and Aditi Gupta, the event provided crucial education and resources to young boys and girls, fostering a healthier and more informed community.
