On August 17, 2024, Ms Shalini led a critical effort to improve menstrual health education for women living in the urban slums of Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Held at a government dispensary, this event combined a Menstrual Health and Hygiene Literacy Session with a Free Pad Donation Camp. The goal was to address the specific needs of these women by providing them with essential knowledge and resources.

Event Overview:

The session was carefully organised to deliver practical information on managing menstrual health. Topics covered included proper sanitation, menstrual care, and the importance of self-care during periods. The session was designed to be interactive, allowing the women to ask questions and share their concerns. This approach helped ensure that the participants understood and appreciated the information.

For example, one woman was concerned about her 15-year-old daughter, who had not yet started her period. The facilitators explained that while it could be expected, consulting a doctor might also be a good idea. Another woman was reassured that sun-drying the cloth she used during her period was a good practice, as it kills bacteria. Additionally, a myth was debunked when a woman was informed that bathing during the first three days of her period does not harm her cycle.

Active Engagement:

The participants were eager to learn more about menstrual health. They asked many questions about the biological aspects of menstruation, how to use feminine products correctly, and how their menstrual health affects their overall well-being. The facilitators provided clear explanations about the anatomy involved and practical advice on managing menstruation-related issues.

Distribution of Kits:

At the end of the session, each woman received a menstrual hygiene kit that included sanitary pads. This gesture provided immediate help and empowered women to manage their menstrual health with dignity.

Impact and Commitment:

The initiative was well-received by the participants, highlighting the importance of educational programs in raising awareness about menstrual health in marginalised communities. The event demonstrated a solid commitment to empowering women through education, helping to create a more informed and supportive community. This effort reflects the ongoing dedication to providing women with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their menstrual health confidently and with dignity.
